Hitched many times from this spot. If you go to Puerto Natales, wait for a direct ride._ because if not, it is not fun to stay in the middile of the pampa where the wind is very strong and cars go fast.―Anonymous

Take a Collectivo 15 to Tres Puentes (any cab with Tres Puentes or Zona Franca), the port (it costs 450 Pesos, less than a USD or Euro). Then walk on the Ruta 9. It's by far not the best spot, but after a while you will manage to get a car to the police post or even to the bigger West/East road split.
You might pay the Collectivo Taxi driver a bit more (like 1000 Pesos) to get you further. Tres Puentes is the last stop of the taxi, so it shouldn't be a big deal.
There's plenty of place to stop, but cars are quick, why I wouldn't necessarily walk further (unlikely to reach a calmer spot on foot).
